"Pontone", was a solid black. She was by "Oakwood Rock", a black dog with a white stripe down his breast, who was by "Rank" out of "Jill", both Pape blacks. "Pontone's" dam, "Lady Hope", was a liver and white; she was by
"Rene Croxteth" ("Devonshire Sam" - "Nellie Bang") out of "Lola Ree" ("Devonshire Sam" - "Della S"). "Rank", the sire of "Oakwood Rock" was by "Maximus" out of "Lady Pape", while "Jill" was by "Crow" out of "Queen". All of these were pure blacks, of the Pape strain."

Using today's terminology, Nellie Bang was an
1880's "Puppy Mill" ... produced 8 litters in 4 years (???) ... she most likely was a solid black, as she was bred 7 times (???) to the liver/white
Devonshire Sam ...
